After Delta plus, now Lambda variant worries the world
After Delta and Delta plus variants, newly detected lambda variant of coronavirus creates anxiety across the world.
According to the Malaysian health ministry, this variant has spread to 30 countries so far, including the UK, a Hindustan Times report said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified lambda as variant of interest’.
To date, six cases of Lambda have been reported in the UK. The earliest documented sample was reported in Peru, the report said.
First identified in Peru, lambda variant shows increased transmissibility and potential reduction in resistance to antibodies. It is estimated that lambda variant accounted for 81 percent of cases in this South American country Peru.
It is also found in lab tests that Lambda variant has been capable for making potential reduction in neutralization after vaccination , the report said.
The WHO website has also listed Eta (B.1.525), Iota (B.1.526) and Kappa (B.1.617.1) as other variants of interest.
