Biden administration presents new legislation bill in the House of Representatives and the Senate on Thursday (February 18). The bill aims to create a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants.
Two Democratic legislators, California Congresswoman Linda Sanchez and New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, will unveil the bill in the House of Representatives and the Senate, respectively.
According to a report, the bill will substitute the term “alien,” used to call the foreigners in immigration legislation, with “non-citizen.”
An estimated 8.15 lakh Indians holding H-1B Visa are in the green-card backlog list in the US. It will take approximately 84 years for most of them to get through the process. The worst will be the cases of their children who number 11.57 lakh, a majority of whom will age out before getting a green-card, leading to a family separation.
Immediately after taking the office, Biden had announced immigration reform bill in order to overhaul former president Donald Trump’s tough immigration policies, including “zero tolerance” border policy towards undocumented immigrants.
Earlier this week Biden also started scrapping the controversial “stay in Mexico” programme, which forced tens of thousands of asylum seekers to remain at the border pending resolution of their cases.
The Trump administration had imposed more than 400 executive orders to stop immigration and punish the undocumented immigrants.
