Tokyo 2020: India beat South Africa in women’s hockey

Indian women hockey team may get chance to play in the quarter final at Tokyo Olympics 2020. In today’s match India beat South Africa (4-3) in a tough final group game.

A hat-trick made by Indian midfielder Vandana Katariya helped the team to defeat South Africa.

As it has been demonstrating on the score board, it was a challenging match for Indian women team as South Africa fought tooth and nail in their last group match. The match was drawn three times but the last goal scored by Vandana in the 49th minute helped India to defeat South Africa.

Vandana also scored in the fourth and 17th minutes while Nehal Goyal scored in the 32nd minute. South Africa equalized with the goals scored by Tarryn Glasby (15th), skipper Erin Hunter (30th) and Marizen Marais (39th).

After the win, India jumped into the fourth place of the group ahead of Ireland. If Ireland wins or draws in today’s match against Great Britain India will be knocked out of the Olympics.

India was defeated in their first three matches. However, the team got the chance to reach the quarter final by defeating Ireland in their previous game. If qualifies, it would be the first time for an Indian women team to qualify to play in a Olympic quarter finals.
