Kerala registers first arrest in pregnant elephant death case

The Kerala Forest Department has registered the first arrest in the most heinous crime in which a pregnant elephant was killed by  some people by feeding the animal with a cracker laden pineapple.

Affirming the arrest, Palakkad Superintendent of Police G Siva Vikram told that a plantation worker identified as P Wilson was arrested in this crime.The arrested is one of the three persons who were taken into custody for interrogation on Thursday.

There may be more arrests in the coming days including the owners of the plantation, report said.

According to the SP two men — Kareem and Riyaz — who are suspected to be the owners of the estate, are at large.

The Forest Department had earlier taken three people into custody but later allowed two persons to leave after questioning them.Two FIRs have been registered in the case, first by the Forest Department and then by the police. Mannarkkad police in Palakkad registered the FIR (first information report) against unknown persons on June 3.
