Mirabai Chanu wins India’s first medal at Tokyo Olympics
India wins the first medal at Tokyo Olympics. India’s Mirabai Chanu has won silver in women’s 49 kg weightlifting.
Chanu lifted a total of 202 kg to win the silver while China’s Zhihui Hou who set a new Olympic record in the snatch at 94kgs in her third lift, won the gold medal. Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah won the bronze.
The 26-year-old Mirabai Chanu is the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal.
Prime minister Narendra Modi on his twitter post congratulated Mirabai Chanu. Taking to twitter Modi wrote, Could not have asked for a happier start to @Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian. #Cheer4India #Tokyo2020.

President of India Ram Nath Kovind also congratulated Mirabai Chanu.
On Friday, Indian hockey team had beaten New Zealand in their opening match in Tokyo.
